I’ve watched a ludicrous amount of anime and not once have I really looked at SAO and been like “yea that series was absolute rubbish”.

Just isn’t true. Well, it is for certain arcs of SAO (looking at you, War of Underworld. That’s atrocious garbage), but not the first.

Well, even if you don’t take it from me, take it from mal, which has notoriously unreliable reviews (ok I know. mal isn’t a great unit of measurement. Still is one to gauge the popular opinion though.) SAO has a 7.2 out of 10 on that site, which is looming around the pretty average anime range.
